Traditional markets close at 4pm. These don't.

The Summary

The Signal

Base recorded $100M in daily DEX trading volume for tokenized stocks this week. Not synthetics. Not prediction markets. Actual tokenized equity trading around the clock on decentralized exchanges. The number matters because it crosses the threshold from experiment to market structure.

Coinbase's SPCXc token, representing SpaceX equity, moved $6.6M alone. That's more daily volume than many small-cap stocks see on Nasdaq. The difference: SpaceX doesn't trade on Nasdaq. It's private. So retail has been locked out. Until now.

"The rapid growth in tokenized stock trading on decentralized exchanges highlights increasing investor interest and potential shifts in equity markets."

OKX just opened pre-IPO trading for OpenAI and Anthropic to European users, with up to 10x leverage on private company valuations. They're offering 100 tokenized stocks and ETFs alongside it. This isn't a sideshow feature. OKX is betting that democratizing access to pre-IPO investments will reshape retail trading dynamics.

The pattern forming here:

  • Coinbase tokenizes equities and seeds them on Base (its L2)
  • DEXs provide 24/7 liquidity without circuit breakers or trading halts
  • OKX and other CEXs add leverage and pre-IPO access for retail
  • Volume compounds as global traders discover they can trade US stocks at 3am

Coinbase appears to be running the same playbook that made USDC the second-largest stablecoin. Create the token. Control the rails. Let the market do the rest. USDC worked because it solved a real problem: moving dollars on-chain without Tether's opacity. Tokenized stocks solve a different problem: access and hours.

Traditional equity markets are closed 71% of the time. News doesn't stop at 4pm. Earnings don't drop on a 9:30am-4pm schedule. But trading does. The demand for 24/7 equity trading is clearly there, and it's showing up in volume numbers that are hard to ignore.

The Implication

If $100M daily on Base is the floor, not the ceiling, we're watching the equity market fragment in real time. Not into chaos, but into two parallel structures: the legacy rails with regulatory clarity and market hours, and the tokenized rails with global access and no clock.

Watch how quickly other L2s copy this. Watch how fast traditional brokerages spin up tokenized offerings or partner with exchanges that have them. And watch what happens when the first major news event hits a company during off-hours and its tokenized version trades through it while the stock market sleeps.
