**The world's largest asset manager just told institutional investors to stop sleeping on the most obvious demand driver for crypto infrastructure since** [**DeFi**](https://wire.fourthweb.ai/tag/defi/)**.**

### The Summary

- [BlackRock told clients that AI agents will drive demand for stablecoins and programmable payment rails](https://cointelegraph.com/news/ai-potential-to-drive-crypto-demand-remains-underappreciated-blackrock?utm%5Fsource=rss%5Ffeed&utm%5Fmedium=rss&utm%5Fcampaign=rss%5Fpartner%5Finbound), calling the connection "underappreciated" by markets
- Tokenized computing capacity represents a second vector for digital asset growth as AI infrastructure scales
- The signal: when [BlackRock](https://wire.fourthweb.ai/tag/blackrock/) calls something underappreciated, they're either front-running a position or trying to educate the clients who'll fund the next cycle

### The Signal

BlackRock manages $11.5 trillion. When they publish research saying markets are missing something, it's worth parsing what they're actually positioning for. [Their latest note argues AI agents need crypto rails](https://cointelegraph.com/news/ai-potential-to-drive-crypto-demand-remains-underappreciated-blackrock?utm%5Fsource=rss%5Ffeed&utm%5Fmedium=rss&utm%5Fcampaign=rss%5Fpartner%5Finbound) because autonomous software can't open bank accounts, pass KYC checks, or wait three business days for ACH transfers. Stablecoins solve the agent payment problem. Programmable [smart contracts](https://wire.fourthweb.ai/tag/smart-contracts/) solve the trust problem when agents transact with other agents or humans they've never met.

This isn't theoretical anymore. We're already seeing proto-versions in production. [AI agents](https://wire.fourthweb.ai/tag/ai-agents/) booking cloud [compute](https://wire.fourthweb.ai/tag/ai-infrastructure/), paying for API calls, settling micro-transactions for data access. Every one of those transactions today involves a human with a credit card or a pre-funded account. That doesn't scale when you're running thousands of agents doing thousands of tasks per hour.

> "AI agents need crypto rails because autonomous software can't open bank accounts or wait three business days for ACH transfers."

BlackRock's second thesis is more interesting because it's less obvious. Tokenizing computing capacity turns [GPU](https://wire.fourthweb.ai/tag/compute-wars/) clusters and inference endpoints into tradeable, financialized assets. Think about it:

- AI compute is scarce, expensive, and increasingly critical infrastructure
- Demand is lumpy but growing exponentially
- Supply is concentrated in a few hyperscalers who have no incentive to commoditize their pricing

Tokenization creates a secondary market for compute capacity. Buy tokens representing future GPU time when demand is low, sell when everyone's training models. Or stake tokens to earn yield from models running on that capacity. It's the same play as tokenizing real estate or treasury bills, but for the infrastructure layer of Web4.

The institutional money hasn't connected these dots yet because they're still thinking about crypto as "digital gold" or "decentralized finance." BlackRock is telling them to reframe. Crypto isn't competing with dollars or banks anymore. It's becoming the payment and settlement layer for machine-to-machine economies that don't exist yet but will be worth trillions.

### The Implication

If BlackRock is right, we're at the early edge of a fundamental demand shift. Not retail speculation. Not even institutional portfolio allocation. Structural demand from AI systems that need programmable money and [tokenized](https://wire.fourthweb.ai/tag/tokenized-assets/) resources to function at scale. Watch for two things: more tradfi giants launching [stablecoin](https://wire.fourthweb.ai/tag/stablecoins/) products aimed at enterprise AI use cases, and tokenized compute marketplaces moving from whitepapers to production. The firms building rails for agent-to-agent payments right now are building the Visa network of Web4.
