Coinbase just filed to become a stockbroker, and the timing says everything about where crypto exchanges think the real money is going.

The Summary

The Signal

Coinbase's move into stock trading isn't about competing with Robinhood. It's about owning the infrastructure layer when every asset becomes programmable. Ryan VanGrack, the company's vice chair and head of corporate affairs, framed it as expansion beyond crypto, but the technical filing tells a different story: leveraged, 24/7 stock exposure without ownership is just tokenized derivatives with a regulatory bow on top.

Traditional brokerages can't do this because they're stuck in the T+2 settlement world. Coinbase has spent a decade building real-time clearing infrastructure for volatile assets. Stocks that trade around the clock on a blockchain-adjacent platform aren't really stocks anymore. They're tokenized representations with all the programmability that implies.

"When the thing you're trading is just a pointer to an asset instead of the asset itself, every Wall Street assumption about trading hours and settlement breaks."

The timing matters. Coinbase is filing this while traditional finance is still arguing about whether Bitcoin ETFs are dangerous. By the time Morgan Stanley figures out how to offer 24/7 stock trading, Coinbase will have:

  • Built the custody infrastructure for tokenized equities
  • Established user habits around always-on markets
  • Created the API layer that Web4 agents will use to trade on behalf of users

VanGrack also mentioned Anthony Armstrong joining the company. Armstrong's background is traditional finance regulatory affairs. You don't hire that profile unless you're planning to hold both crypto exchange licenses AND broker-dealer status simultaneously. That dual infrastructure is the bridge.

The Implication

Watch who else files for these hybrid licenses in the next six months. The first exchanges to hold both crypto and securities dealer status will become the default rails for tokenized everything: stocks, bonds, real estate, private equity. When your AI agent needs to rebalance your portfolio at 3 AM because it detected a pattern in Asian markets, it won't call Schwab.

The real play is when this infrastructure starts handling tokenized private company shares, real estate fragments, and IP rights. Coinbase is building the operating system. The apps haven't been written yet.
