**The companies building the AI infrastructure of Web4 don't want their shares** [**tokenized**](https://wire.fourthweb.ai/tag/tokenized-assets/) **on Web3 rails.**

### The Summary

- [Nine publicly traded companies — including AI compute provider CoreWeave, chipmaker Broadcom, and telecom giant Verizon — have formally objected](https://www.theblock.co/news/markets/2026-10-17-coreweave-broadcom-verizon-among-nine-companies-objecting-to-tokenized-trading-of-their-shares-on-okxice-418859?ref=wire.fourthweb.ai) to OKX and ICE's plan to launch tokenized versions of their stocks
- [Each objection bars the affected stock token from trading under the SEC's conditional exemption](https://thedefiant.io/converge/tradfi-and-fintech/coreweave-broadcom-join-objections-to-okx-ice-stock-tokenization?ref=wire.fourthweb.ai), effectively killing those tokens before launch
- [Applied Optoelectronics said it objected because it was "unsure how tokenization would affect its stock price, liquidity and volatility"](https://www.theblock.co/news/markets/2026-10-17-coreweave-broadcom-verizon-among-nine-companies-objecting-to-tokenized-trading-of-their-shares-on-okxice-418859?ref=wire.fourthweb.ai) — translation: no one knows what happens when your stock exists in two markets at once
- The irony is thick. CoreWeave sells the [GPU](https://wire.fourthweb.ai/tag/compute-wars/) compute that powers crypto trading. Now it's blocking crypto from trading its own equity.

### The Signal

OKX and Intercontinental Exchange (ICE, which owns the New York Stock Exchange) partnered to launch tokenized versions of U.S. stocks on blockchain rails. The pitch: 24/7 trading, fractional ownership, programmable shares, all the blockchain benefits. The reality: [companies can opt out, and nine already have](https://thedefiant.io/converge/tradfi-and-fintech/coreweave-broadcom-join-objections-to-okx-ice-stock-tokenization?ref=wire.fourthweb.ai).

The objector list reads like a who's-who of Web4 infrastructure. CoreWeave, the AI compute company that just [IPO](https://wire.fourthweb.ai/tag/ipo-watch/)'d on the back of insatiable demand for GPU clusters. Broadcom, whose chips power [data centers](https://wire.fourthweb.ai/tag/ai-infrastructure/) and AI training. Verizon, laying the fiber for all of it. Also on the list: Applied Optoelectronics, Aehr Test Systems, GSE Systems, OpGen, Orgenesis, and Quantum Computing.

> "These are the companies building the plumbing for [autonomous agents](https://wire.fourthweb.ai/tag/ai-agents/) and tokenized everything. And they want nothing to do with being tokenized themselves."

[The SEC's conditional exemption allows stock tokenization, but only if the issuer doesn't object](https://www.theblock.co/news/markets/2026-10-17-coreweave-broadcom-verizon-among-nine-companies-objecting-to-tokenized-trading-of-their-shares-on-okxice-418859?ref=wire.fourthweb.ai). One email to the exchange, and your token is dead. No hearing, no debate, no override. It's a veto button disguised as regulatory innovation.

[Applied Optoelectronics told the Wall Street Journal it was worried about how tokenization would affect price stability, liquidity, and volatility](https://www.theblock.co/news/markets/2026-10-17-coreweave-broadcom-verizon-among-nine-companies-objecting-to-tokenized-trading-of-their-shares-on-okxice-418859?ref=wire.fourthweb.ai). Fair concerns. When your stock trades on Nasdaq from 9:30 to 4:00 and on a blockchain 24/7, which price is real? What happens when weekend token traders move the price 15% before Monday's opening bell? Who arbitrages the spread, and how fast?

These aren't hypothetical problems:

- Tokenized stocks create two parallel markets with different trading hours, rules, and participants
- Price discovery fragments across venues, complicating everything from executive comp to M&A valuations
- Regulatory clarity is thin. The SEC gave a conditional green light, but no playbook for dual-market dynamics

### The Implication

This is what friction looks like when Web3 tries to absorb TradFi without asking permission. The technology works. The business case is there. But the stakeholders who matter most — the companies whose equity is being tokenized — aren't playing along.

For OKX and ICE, this is a warning shot. You can't tokenize the economy top-down if the companies opt out one by one. The path forward is either regulatory mandates (unlikely), incentive alignment (what's in it for issuers?), or starting with assets that don't have a veto button. Real estate, commodities, private credit — things without a CEO who can kill the token with one email.

For the rest of us, watch which companies say yes. Those will be the ones that see 24/7 liquidity and global access as features, not bugs. Probably smaller companies, international firms, or those already crypto-native. The Microsofts and Apples of the world? They'll wait until the market proves itself without them.
