**The richest men in tech just agreed on something, which should make you nervous.**

### The Summary

- [Google just launched four Tensor Processing Units into orbit](https://www.fastcompany.com/91617037/why-tech-companies-are-racing-to-put-ai-data-centers-in-space?ref=wire.fourthweb.ai) aboard a Planet Labs satellite to test space-based AI compute. Bezos and Musk are both betting on orbital [data centers](https://wire.fourthweb.ai/tag/ai-infrastructure/).
- The pitch: solar panels collect 8x more energy in space than on Earth, with near-continuous power and no grid dependency. Run the models up there, beam results down via laser or radio.
- Critics say the economics are fantasy and the cooling advantages evaporate under scrutiny. But the tests are already flying.

### The Signal

[Google's orbital TPU test](https://www.fastcompany.com/91617037/why-tech-companies-are-racing-to-put-ai-data-centers-in-space?ref=wire.fourthweb.ai) isn't a science experiment. It's a hedge against a power crisis that's already here. Data centers will eat nearly half of U.S. electricity demand growth through 2030\. That's not a forecast, that's infrastructure math colliding with AI scaling laws. Every foundation model that goes from GPT-4 to GPT-5 scale needs exponentially more compute, which needs exponentially more power, which the grid can't deliver at the pace AI labs want to move.

Space solves the power problem with physics. Solar panels in the right orbit see the sun 24/7 and collect eight times the energy they would on Earth. No weather, no night, minimal battery storage. You're not negotiating with utilities or waiting for grid upgrades or dealing with NIMBYs who don't want a nuclear reactor next to their town. You launch, you deploy, you compute.

> "Data centers will be better built in space, because we have solar power there, 24/7." — Jeff Bezos

The output gets beamed down by laser or radio. The model trains in orbit, the weights come back to Earth, the inference happens wherever you need it. Bezos said it in Italy last year. Musk made it a SpaceX priority. Google is testing it now. When the richest technologists alive converge on the same idea this fast, it's either brilliant or a shared delusion with escape velocity.

Here's the bullish case in three parts:

- Unlimited solar power with no grid bottleneck
- No cooling infrastructure (space is cold, or so the pitch goes)
- Bypass every terrestrial constraint: permits, utilities, land acquisition, local politics

Here's the bear case: launching compute into space costs tens of thousands of dollars per kilogram. Satellites break. Radiation fries chips. And the cooling argument falls apart when you remember that heat doesn't radiate efficiently in a vacuum. You can't just "let it cool" in space. You need radiators, heat management systems, and a lot of engineering that nobody's proven at scale yet. Every chip that goes up there needs to survive launch, operate in a radiation-heavy environment, and stay functional for years without a repair truck rolling up.

The economics are science fiction until they're not. SpaceX's reusable rockets changed the cost curve for launches. Starlink proved you could build and operate constellations at scale. The orbital compute skeptics sound exactly like the people who said reusable rockets were a fantasy in 2010.

### The Implication

If space-based AI compute works, the grid isn't the bottleneck anymore. That changes who can scale models and where the leverage sits. Countries without abundant energy can compete. Companies without utility partnerships can train. The entire geopolitical map of AI shifts when compute moves off-planet.

Watch the Google test. If those TPUs stay alive and functional for six months, the race is on. If they fry in three weeks, we just learned an expensive lesson about physics.
