The real vulnerability isn't sabotage. It's dependency. If the DoD relies on Anthropic for training, fine-tuning, or model updates, then yes, Anthropic controls the roadmap. But if the military treats foundation models like they treat other software tools, buying a version, forking it, running it on their own infrastructure, the vendor becomes irrelevant post-deployment.

What this fight actually signals: the Pentagon doesn't yet understand how to procure AI. They're applying old frameworks (vendor lock-in, supply chain risk) to a technology with different failure modes. The question isn't whether Anthropic could sabotage deployed models. It's whether the DoD is structurally capable of owning and operating AI tools without permanent vendor dependence. Right now, that answer is unclear.

The Implication

If you're building AI tools for defense, critical infrastructure, or any high-stakes vertical, the technical architecture matters less than the deployment model. Can your customer run it independently? Can they fine-tune without calling you? Can they audit the weights? If not, you're not selling software. You're selling dependency. And your biggest customer is starting to notice.
