- Description: Stablecoin issuers just proved they can freeze your tokens anytime, but also that they're too slow to stop a motivated thief. Circle and Tether blacklisted wallet "Bitget Exploiter 8", freezing roughly $318,000 in USDC and USDT after a massive Bitget exchange hack

**Stablecoin issuers just proved they can freeze your tokens anytime, but also that they're too slow to stop a motivated thief.**

### The Summary

- [Circle and Tether blacklisted wallet "Bitget Exploiter 8"](https://decrypt.co/379365/circle-tether-freeze-stablecoins-bitget-hack?ref=wire.fourthweb.ai), freezing roughly $318,000 in USDC and USDT after a massive Bitget exchange hack
- [Most stolen funds already converted to ETH](https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/09/25/circle-and-tether-step-in-to-freeze-hacker-wallet-after-massive-bitget-crypto-heist?ref=wire.fourthweb.ai), which has no freeze function and sits outside centralized control
- The freeze demonstrates both the power and fundamental limitation of centralized [stablecoins](https://wire.fourthweb.ai/tag/stablecoins/) in Web3

### The Signal

[Circle and Tether moved quickly to blacklist the hacker wallet](https://decrypt.co/379365/circle-tether-freeze-stablecoins-bitget-hack?ref=wire.fourthweb.ai), locking $318,000 across their stablecoin platforms. It sounds like a win for coordinated response. But zoom out and the story gets more complicated. The attacker had already swapped the bulk of the stolen funds into ether before the freeze could take effect.

This isn't a new playbook. Sophisticated attackers know the freeze window exists and they know how to outrun it. Convert to non-freezable assets first, ask questions never. [The frozen amount represents a tiny fraction of the total heist](https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/09/25/circle-and-tether-step-in-to-freeze-hacker-wallet-after-massive-bitget-crypto-heist?ref=wire.fourthweb.ai), with most funds now sitting in ETH where no central authority can touch them.

> "Most of the stolen funds sit in ether, which can't be frozen."

The freeze mechanism reveals the core tension in Web3's asset layer:

- Stablecoins offer regulatory compliance and merchant adoption
- That compliance requires centralized control and blacklist functions
- Hackers exploit this by converting to truly decentralized assets within minutes
- The "freeze window" becomes a countdown timer for theft completion

The Bitget case highlights how centralized and decentralized money create different security models when they collide. [Circle](https://wire.fourthweb.ai/tag/circle/) and Tether can flip a switch and make their tokens worthless in a specific wallet. That's reassuring if you're a regulator or a victim of fraud. It's terrifying if you believe "code is law" or worry about arbitrary seizure.

But the attacker knew this. They structured their exit to minimize exposure to freezable assets. The $318,000 they left in stablecoins might have been unavoidable friction, the cost of moving fast across bridges and DEXs. Or it might have been a decoy while the real haul moved elsewhere.

### The Implication

If you hold stablecoins, you hold IOUs from companies that can blacklist your wallet on request from law enforcement, internal compliance, or in response to hacks. That's the trade for price stability and off-ramp access. If you're building systems that need censorship resistance, stablecoins are the wrong foundation layer. Watch for more sophisticated attackers who treat the "freeze window" as a known variable in their theft architecture, not a deterrent.
